“Siamo profondamente indignate, come donne impegnate nel mondo dell’università e della cultura, per il modo in cui il presidente del Consiglio italiano, Silvio Berlusconi, tratta le donne sulla scena pubblica e privata.

Non ci riferiamo solo alle vicende relazionali del premier, che trascendono la sfera personale e assumono un significato pubblico, ma soprattutto alle modalità di reclutamento del personale politico e ai comportamenti e discorsi sessisti che delegittimano con perversa e ilare sistematicità la presenza femminile sulla scena sociale e istituzionale. Questi comportamenti, gravi sul piano morale, civile, culturale, minano la dignità delle donne e incidono negativamente sui percorsi di autonomia e affermazione femminili.

Il controllo che Berlusconi esercita sulla grande maggioranza dei media italiani, in spregio a ogni regola democratica, limita pesantemente le possibilità di esprimere dissenso e critica. Risulta difficile, quindi, far emergere l’insofferenza di tante donne che non si riconoscono nell’immagine femminile trasmessa dal premier e da chi gli sta intorno.

Come cittadine italiane, europee e del mondo, rivolgiamo un appello alle first ladies dei paesi coinvolti nel prossimo G 8 dell’Aquila perché disertino l’appuntamento italiano, per affermare con forza che la delegittimazione della donna in un paese offende e colpisce le donne di tutti i paesi.”

APPEAL to the FIRST LADIES
of the countries present at the forthcoming G8 meeting in L’Aquila

DON’T COME TO THE ITALIAN MEETING

As Italian women active in Academia and Culture we are profoundly indignant about the way the Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, treats women in the public sphere as well as in private.
We are not only referring to the personal affairs of the Prime Minister which go beyond the private sphere, taking on a public meaning, but most of all to the way in which the political personnel is recruited and to the sexist behavior and discourse that, in a perverse and systematic way, delegitimizes the presence of women on the social and institutional scene. These behaviors, appalling from a moral, civil, and cultural perspective, threaten the dignity of women and exert a negative impact on the self-determination and achievement of women.

The control that Berlusconi exerts over the majority of Italian media, disdaining any democratic rule, seriously limits any possibility to express disagreement or critique. It therefore becomes increasingly difficult to convey the uneasiness of the many women who dissociate themselves from the image of women that the Prime Minister and people around him transmit.

As citizens of Italy, of Europe and of the world, we appeal to the First Ladies of the countries involved in the upcoming G8 at L’Aquila, asking them to desert the Italian meeting, to affirm strongly and unambiguously that the delegitimization of women in one country offends women of all countries.

NE VENEZ PAS AU RENDEZ-VOUS ITALIEN

En tant que femmes impliquées dans le monde de l’université et de la culture, nous sommes profondément indignées, par la façon dont le président du Conseil italien, Silvio Berlusconi, traite les femmes sur la scène publique et privée.

Nous ne nous référons pas seulement aux relations du premier ministre, qui mettent sa vie privée sur la scène publique, mais surtout aux modalités de recrutement du personnel politique et aux comportements et discours sexistes qui discréditent avec une perversité systématique et goguenarde la présence féminine sur la scène sociale et institutionnelle. Ces comportements, graves sur le plan moral, civil et culturel, menacent la dignité des femmes et ont une incidence négative sur l’autonomie et l’affirmation féminines.

Le contrôle que Berlusconi exerce sur la majeure partie des médias italiens, en dépit de toute règle démocratique, limite largement les possibilités d’exprimer désaccords et critiques. Il est donc difficile de faire émerger le désaccord de tant de femmes qui ne se reconnaissent pas dans l’image de la femme transmise par le premier ministre et son entourage.

En tant que citoyennes italiennes, européennes et du monde, nous faisons appel aux premières dames des pays impliqués dans le prochain G8 pour qu’elles ne participent pas au rendez-vous italien, afin d’affirmer avec force que le discrédit de la femme dans un pays offense et porte atteinte aux femmes de tous les pays.
